The so-called controversy over Jesse Santana's interview on The Derek and Romaine Show last Thursday still boils as expected because the show has a segment called "The Monday Mailbag".
Before Derek reads the email, David Forest of David Forest Entertainment weighs in in a mellow way, trying to figure out what's all this circus is all about.
Derek once again thinks this is silly. Romaine agrees because Jesse didn't say anything. Howard from FabScout also assured Derek it was fine.
Derek suggested why this is getting flamed out for nothing because everyone told Jesse that they thinks he should felt bad.
Then Jesse Santana's e-mail was read. Partially, because 2/3 of the email was addressing the question they asked last Thursday.
Jesse apologized for being unprofessionally and explained why. Then he shifted his tone and fired back, while addressing the questions. The crew were being sarcastic and thought he probably cut and paste from Wikipedia. This would be valid at anytime but mentioned it at this time sounds tacky. Listen to the audio clip below.
On Myanmar, Jesse did pointed out that if Myanmar doesn't want our aids, why should we rush? (IMO, yes, I think it's a bit harsh anyways but that's the truth. There's this government tried to claim the credit anyways)
At the end, Jesse said Jason wasn't his personal publicist. (Jason is the publicist for JetSet Men) He also demands apology.
Derek fired back, believes Jesse is getting upset because people told him he should be, which bores him. If Jason Sechrest wasn't Jesse Santana's publicist, why is Jason booking him. At one point, Sam the Producer felt bad (tone unclear, but I take it genuinely)
Then the callers weigh in. They were outraged and thinks how dare Jesse is demanding apology since he sounded fine, doesn't sound offended throughout the interview.
Romaine weighs in on her view. Listen to the audio below.
One listener pointed "I think it would've been your best interest to read this email thoroughly" seems to be a threat. Romaine also said "I was going to tell Derek & Sam to have him back, apologize, and all of fun before this email, and I don't care whether he comes back or not".
Full Audio of the segments. Nothing has been edited out.
Dear Derek & Romaine
I was introduced to your show by one of my friends who also involved with SIRIUS. That was week 2 when OutQ and SIRIUS launched in April 2003. I was 18 at the time. Life was shitty as I was still in the turmoil of coming out. You guys has been my source of entertainment and knowledge ever since. Especially I don't watch TV that much so I pretty much rely on your knowledge and experience in the entertainment industry.
I guess I never realized how I could be devoted and invested myself into your so-called "little" radio show. It's not little. It means a lot for everyone, not just me. Like other listeners you guys are part of our individual friends. I listen and record the show everyday, have some laugh, it's like hanging out with friends. There were times of some tidbits about you guys in trouble and on the edge of being fired. There were times that some people and even people from SIRIUS is not too amused with you couple in the early days. I defended you guys because you guys were wonderful. I tried to sweet talk to it (because it was true) sometimes, and as much as I don't think I have anything to do with your show being saved multiple times, if I didn't voice my opinion on how fantastic you guys were, I think you guys wouldn't be on the airwaves today.
The show, is about everything. It's not for everyone, it's only for you, the individual, as the theme goes. The show can be serious, can be fucked up, can be hilarious, can be sad, can be humiliating. That's the fun of the show, ripping people off, humiliating them, creates the best radio moments.
Last Thursday, when you guys had JetSet exclusive and CockyBoys Exclusive Jesse Santana on the air, I was listening to the recording since I record the show on my Stiletto. When I was listening to the interview minutes after it was finished, I was in a good mood, an entertained mood. The beginning went well like any other interview until the sarcastic tone and the intention of humilation surfaced. I was not amused. Right at the bus stop. I was all by myself. My initial thought was, this was a humiliation.
Moreover, it got me really frustrated and even furious was, that your intention to do so was not because at what Jesse did but rather Jason Sechrest did. Granted, you guys have the valid points. I didn't dispute that. It seems unprofessional to call in at the last minute to reschedule the interview earlier, when you have 3 back-to-back guests on the same hour. If I were you, I'd be irritated too.
The reason why I wasn't being critical towards Jason is because a) I hate being critical and b) you already pointed out the what you guys think that were his mistakes. I'm not telling Jason, "here take it, or I'll shove it in your ass". Same to you guys, I'm not going to tell you what to do. I'm just expressing my frustration and irritation.
As per Derek said on the air, everything was a disaster to begin with. But this is the life of being a radio show host. Sometimes it's smooth and fun, but sometimes it's a disaster. Taking Romaine's word from Monday night, if Jason is being a douche to you guys and Jesse was unprofessional, you guys could have done it professionally, you guys could have pretend nothing happen and bitch about it afterward. You guys could have be a bigger person at that point. You guys could have stop using people's flaws to cover your intention. I know it is not fair for you guys to clean up someone else's shit (since you guys thought that way probably), then why are you leaving more shit? You guys could've totally spin the table and make yourself look good and show what a professional radio show host should be. Instead, you guys went mellowly bullistic and make fun of it because of others. That type of fun is not fun. Why should Jesse be a victim in the feud between you guys and Jason?
On Friday's show you guys spent 30 minutes to explain the history of the feud between Derek & Romaine and Jason Sechrest. While it was a good background introduction, but I found it totally irrelevant. It only further proves that you're doing it intentionally to get back at Jason, while making Jesse looks like a moron.
Jesse Santana is not a moron in contrary to what the other bitches think. Just because he fucks ass and has his ass fucked on camera doesn't make him a moron. It doesn't make him lose his dignity. It doesn't mean he is dumb. Jesse shot down your question by answering "I'm not into politics, I'm all about myself". It's probably just a way to say "sorry, I don't want to express my opinion nor answer this question, especially on my birthday". Who wants to talk such heavy-duty live-or-die question on their own birthday? It ruins everything.
What makes it more upsetting is, the way you guys looks down to a porn star most of the time, while claiming to be supportive to the gay porn industry. Yes, you have a valid point, porn star's life span on the tv screen is about 18 months in average. Yes, you guys were right on that some porn stars were intelligent and smart, and you guys love to have them back on the show. Yes, undisputedly The Derek & Romaine Show is the national mainstream media oultet for any porn stars, regardless gay or straight, to be know. Yes, you guys devoted lots of times to your friends in the porn industry, not to mention Derek's cameo in Buckshot Productions' "Big Rig".
But just because these boys comes and goes quickly every second, and some are just gay-for-pay so you think it's ok not to take them seriously at that particular time? Or totally have nothing to ask and didn't even put an effort? No wonder you guys got snubbed by Jason (which I believe it was just a mis-understanding or something) back in August 2003. Like you said before on the air, radio duos doesn't last longer than average 18 months. You guys weren't even planning to carry it on for 5 years on one of the biggest show at SIRIUS. And on Friday night you mentioned that Jason snubbed you and Romaine because you guys were nobody at that time. That's so contradictory. How long will Jesse stays in the industry is not the matter. What matters is, he is the hit right now, and people likes him, and the hottest star in 2008. Just because if Jesse decides to call it quit tomorrow, or next month or year, it doesn't mean you can't just fuck around and don't take it seriously right at this moment.
I don't believe Jesse Santana misguided. He's not a toy. I don't believe I was misguided. I have a brain. Both him and I make our own individual judgment. All what I did and the people around him did was simply telling him, I thought the interview was bad, not because of you, but they were bad. Sorry to say, the listeners are either a) take their own judgment and think this is really boring because the gays are being drama queens; or b) they're blindly support you.
I'm not trying to get my names out with your names attached. I'm really frustrated and not amused by this so I'm expressing my thoughts on my little blog. Trust me I won't get famous by stepping on you two's head because that's just inappropriate. The reason why I'm writing this is because, in my opinion, no one told you guys you actually handled the situation wrong.
Call me insane. Call me a nut case. Call me a crazy bitch. Call me a retard. Call me a bigot. Call me anything because my moral value is probably wrong. But I think I need to stop listening to your lovely show for few weeks. To get myself calm down, so I can enjoy what a true radio entertainment should be.
Good luck Derek Hartlet & Romaine Patterson. Thank you for your entertainment for the last 5 years to date. I look forward to the future. Especially when you guys continues the evolution.
Sincerely from a long-time listener,
jimy in Vancouver.
ps. I'm posting the audio clip to accompany these post is because I have no intention to twist or make up the word that you don't own from the beginning . Like you said Derek, it gives people opportunity to decide on this issue. And somehow you imply that any of the outrage or frustration over this is simply because we thought we need to feel bad about it.
